They nerfed the permanent food for that reason. I guess they didn't expect that some of us, would be crazy enough to farm that much larvas/mushrooms.
For new players, this weapon serves no purpose to be honest. Actually the Legendary bow is useless too, lol. Legendary weapons need a huge boost to make them feel legendary. If legendary means, having no durability, well, I rather have a powerful weapon with durability.
Phantom spark is actually quite powerful. Between having good damage, an insanely good rmb, and a substantial buff to crit stats, it is one of the best ranged weapons hands down, and tailor-made for one of the better/best builds. Maybe not the highest DPS but it's so stable and versatile to work with. Everything they did wrong with runesong they did right with this one.
I'm still waiting to see if something gets added that's worth replacing the bow with. Like, a straight upgrade, because so far you have several top tier ranged weapons and it's more like pick your poison. Of course the upgrade bench really does the heavy lifting here, keeping weapons relevant past their due date.
As for runesong, I agree that they really should rework it. Remove the insta-kill, add crit stats, add a good rmb (maybe the same sweep as octarine axe, that move is just great). Or maybe make it like a longer range sweeping galaxite dagger. But I'm biased, I run a crit build so naturally I want them to basically copy/paste such bonuses onto it. Give me a melee counterpart to phantom spark and I'm happy lol. x'D

Addendum: I checked the wiki, nothing of note was added in 1.0 for ranged weapons. (unless void gun deals multiple hits while drawing enemies in, never fired the thing I just checked the wiki and on paper it's not great) So not only is it not weak by any means, For my preferences and stat requirements it is still the number 1 ranged weapon in the game. Not having to repair it is just the cherry on top. This thing is great.
[optimal DPS comparison at Item level 18, before secondary stats]
Formula: (min dmg per hit + max dmg per hit : 2) x attacks per sec
- Phantom Spark - 373 DPS
(good balance of crit chance and crit damage, rmb is great for burst when you don't have a constant line of fire)
- Throwing Daggers - 380 DPS
(great crit chance boost, but lacks crit damage)
- Galaxite Chakram - 380 DPS
(great crit dmg boost, but lacks crit chance)
- Solarite Crossbow - 370 DPS
(provides some crit chance and a nice flat damage boost, piercing shot also isn't bad)
Only 7 damage per second below two other top ranged weapons, and 3 above another. Which would put it in a respectable 3rd place (with practically no difference with the others) when not counting crit chance and crit damage. When counting those it is the best one by a small margin, and that margin becomes a bit larger if you also take the rmb into account.
At the very least you can't go wrong when using it is what I'm trying to say. ;)
jokes aside, what would you recommend?
With some armors, It can get scarier like the oct armor set which increase the atk spd of the bow the more hp segs you are missing.
it outperforms all ranged weapons currently in terms of dps IF you can stay on the boss fulltime. its flat out better for any regular enemy basically since the lighting snaps to the target if you just aim in the generel direction and fire.
the hydras have a dmg cap either way so you must down them 4 times to actually kill one no matter what dps you deal its scripted to become immune sadly. however that thing deals dmg so fast that you can sometimes deal more than 25% dmg before the immunity check kicks in.
you can even use it vs urschleim where any other melee weapon will flat out FAIL outright as thing cannot be meleeed without basically dying instantly no matter what difficulty since its contact dmg is a 15.000 dmg hit.
a stormbringer build can kill the molten mass in sub 5 seconds of it becomeing targetable on hardmode. thats 250.000 dmg. in sub 5 seconds. go figure.
getting it asap requires only getting an obliteration ray. the rest is a joke. the passage is in every direction at the edge of the current world and all you must do is farm a 100 pandorium ore and find a riftstaute. they are easy to find. there is atleast 5 in any direction in the central passage.
its easier to get and better than other legendarys.
imo the crafting costs of soul seeker need to be greatly reduced now. its not longer jusitfied to cost so much on top of beeing harder to get.
rune song needs a complete stat redesign. the instant kill does nothing on any enemy from desert onwards even at max possible hp currently as they are all above you on hardmode. so this stat essential doesnt do anything.
5 hp per hit is a joke. may aswell have nothing.
90 hp is decent but still weak compared to other legendarys.
this thing needs a buff badly. a huge buff. and not to its base dmg. that isnt the issue. it needs a completly new effect and some actually useful stats.
the bow is still great. no reason for big changes there. but the galaxite chakram outperforms it if you spam it.
