The top and bottom drills work, but the one on the side doesn't. Any ideas why?

Also can confirm the empty cocoon makes some bugs any time you run past it.

Should I replace the turf blocks with something that spawns worms??

If there are two unconnected roots, like in your layout, they will clash for the spot and neither will grow.
