What does +57 fishing actually do?
I get that it improves my fishing somehow, but what specifically improves here?

Does it make fish bite faster?
Do I catch more fish instead of other items?

Both - it depends on which talent you want to level on the skill tree

From what I got, it increases the speed to get a bite. If you only fish at prime spots, it multiplies the speed but between that, it's slow unless you have a nice rod.

Basically another mining tool but in water.

I don't see how +X fishing skill is related to talents, unless the talents specifically say "+30% of fishing added as range damage".

If I take an item like the Sea Foam Ring. At item level 10 it gives +57 fishing. What improves by increasing fishing by 57?

But then there are items like Goldfish Ring that say "Fish (and other things) bite +15% faster", so I assume +57 fishing must do more?

I would like a concrete answer to this as well but I can state what I found through testing and seen stated elsewhere. Your fishing level has to be of a certain level to fish in the higher levels that tend to align with the fishing pole made from the material of that area. For example, if you have a scarlet rod you can't fish in the ocean biome but if you wear fishing gear or eat fishing food you can with the same pole, allowing you to "skip" pole levels. Through my own testing I can't tell if the fish are truly biting faster or if it is placebo affect, however, it definitely affects the chance of a fish versus an item. It seems to vary by area as well, meaning if i fish in the jungle vs the frontier with the same fishing level I will get almost no items in jungle but still get items regularly in the frontier area. Hopefully, someone can confirm more but the wiki is not helpful.
