Cattle farm
Why even have it? All the cattle glitch out of the fences and typically die on spikes scattered around my base.

Fence gate kind a don't work very well for cattle. Those cattle glitch threw them when I was not around. Oddly that fence with out any fence gate only seem to keep those cattle in just fine.

In the end I just use maze block as my fence to keep those cattle inside just fine and side way fence as my entrance(that not a fence gate) to my cattle.

Strangely I never had any issues with fencing/gates but since V1.0 I see numbers of post about this. And I got my farming area just on the other side of the fence never got any cattle jump over and mess the farm nor glitch through walls.

Does it only happen with a specific placement or a matter of the size of the enclosure? or i'm just lucky and my cattle are very docile?

I got about an 8x8 south and west are dirt walls, north and east are wood fences and there's a wood gate on the east side.

It normally wouldn't be such a big deal, but they don't respawn. Once you catch/kill it, that's it. I think my cattle farm was 16 x 16 or something like that.

I had 10+ animals in it, came back, was only 3. I got to run around and collect all the meat left on the spikes. And having spikes all over my base goes back to another issue with this game.
I'm done with the cattle farm. Would like to have carpeted my base, but that's not an option in the current state of the game.

You know what I normally do to keep my base safe from monster early on. Just dig holes around my base. That just happen work really well to keep monster out of my base in early game. You only need a wooden shovel to do this early game. Oddly enough that it keep those Cattle stay in side of animal area.

(edit) The chance of monster kill all cattle like cow and goat are really unlikely to happen. Mostly in Azeos' Wilderness. Also caveling miner can't even break grass wall in Azeos' Wilderness. Most of the time that caveling miner often get kill by purple poison slime any way in Azeos' Wilderness. Oddly that those caveling miner ignore wooden fence and also ignore wooden gate.

Wool?

If fences don't work, you can use blocks to seal your cattle with enough food inside the meadow biome and later come back to collect the wool and milk.

I use 3 rows of blocks and remove creature spawner for another 5-10 tiles distance around my points of interest. If there are cavelings nearbye you can also create a moat and place more fences and gates to separate the regions.
