I've got a band aid, but not a solution.
I have a world with several chests, a campfire and nothing else, when my bags get full I load into that world and drop everything off. Load back to my main world, carry on exploring and then go pick everything up and sort it out when I'm done.
It only takes 4 big chests to store every valuable in game and I'm yet to get a full stack of any of them (or set up a display for them for that matter).
I am a hoarder though, so I don't junk anything but seeds.
Opened my inventory and took one look at all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ I had to sort and backed out and quit...
In other words...I agree.
Survival games tend to have a lot of "crap". Can't think of any I've played where there isn't a lot to sort through.
Couldnt this problem be solved by some sort of a loot filter? (with the addiotnal option of harvested blocks not going into your inventory)
Devs, please make storage and item management something like Terraria's Magic Storage Mod. And please allow for item filters, whether they just don't get picked up at all, or we can auto-trash items that we do pick up. These two features will boost retention, I promise.
Have been playing about 200 hours (though half of that was prob AFK'ing). This is the one thing right now that I really find tedious about the game.
Quick stack to nearby chests is an absolute no brainer. But also a way to properly automate item sorting is needed.
Mid to late game there should be some more automation options that open this up as a possibility.
They aren't auto deleted. They are still bobbing around where you left them.
