You may be playing the wrong game if you don't want to do any of that. XD
I will say, though, that you're not forced to collect wool. While it is used in crafting some higher tier armours and decorations, there are plenty of other high tier armour pieces that can be looted from enemies or chests in the world. This means you're not locked into having to babysit cattle and can still progress without issues if you prefer just going out and exploring/fighting. :)
yeah most games of this style its all optional to do stuff like that. outside of terraria with a pretty heavy fishing system, but yeah generally you can get the drops anyways, but can get them faster/more consistently by ranching. but the cattle just straight up dont drop wool unless they are happy with you?
i guess i might have to build a ranch in the middle of the meadows laced with explosives and det them when i have enough.
The thing about these cattle is you don't have to constantly tend them or they'll die. :)
You can just pop them in a quick pen at base, go throw some raw ingredients (like mushrooms / heart berries / glow tulips / etc) in their feeding tray and they'll drop wool as long as they are well fed. If you don't need more wool and don't plan to keep them well fed to have them breed for an easy meat source, you don't need to bother feeding them and they'll just chill out forever in the pen. :)
Since wool was added far past the point I had essentially "beaten the game" in terms of fighting bosses and getting the best gear, I have little need for it, so my cattle mostly sit starving at the back of the base somewhere. XD I go over to feed them now and then if I'm already running around doing my "base chores" like produce farming and emptying my mob farms, but only so I have a little supply of wool ready in case friends new to the game decide to join my world. XD
