How to use the pet system

I made a creative world, tried equipping a pet, opening an egg, trying to place the pet, trying to feed it, I just have no idea how to get the system to work. Any ideas?

In creative, you have to disable god mode and I think also enable play mode

There's an incubator item in the Copper-tier workbench, I've never actually played creative so I have no idea where it'd be. Now... I have to figure out where you find Glass Shards.

There is a smelter for sand as well.

Spoiler in case you want to find out yourself:
Glass shards are made in the glass melter. You can get that from the copper workbench and the copper workbench is in the wooden workbench

nevermind, just found out you have to not have the world paused.
