Multiplayer and Skill Leveling
Probably addressed across other discussions but I'm having an issue with leveling up my character on my friend's world.

I totally get that while i'm digging, they can be fighting enemies and leveling up different skills but our skill levels are way too different for the amount of time we've put into the world. We've plugged probably about 70hrs so far, lots of afk time, and we've knocked out the main core bosses and then the outer ring bosses and Slime mini-bosses (multiple times for gear grind). At the end of the day, my ranged stat is at 36 and melee as 14, whereas theirs are both above level 60. Our vitality level are close though, mine at 38 and theirs at 52.

Could there be a bug with joining a multiplayer server or based on the level-up mechanic, they are just getting all the kills? Would appreciate the perspective as we will inevitably play again when updates come out. :bbtcat:

it just takes forever to level up melee and ranged. I've played for 150 hours and haven't maxed both yet, and I've gone out of my way to kill nearly everything I've come across.

Your friend is probably killing all the weak monsters when you aren't on screen

Your friend probably made a melee/ranged farm. Vitality always levels faster than your weapon skills when you're only killing mobs as you explore. That his vit is lower means he's working smarter not harder. Vitality only gains exp on kills, melee and ranged gain exp on hit. ;)

All you need is some poison ground slime and conveyor belts to build one. Then respec to empty out melee, ranged and cooking. You will want to get rid of all your damage bonuses and only take attack speed. Then unequip your gear and hit poison slimes with your bare hands or wooden bow. You will now deal low enough damage that they outheal as long as their path to you is obstructed by say a hole in the ground.

Not on my pc atm but I will include a screenshot later so you know how to set it up.

Make 2 or 3 long rows (lets say twice the width of your screen) of purple slime ground. Cover them with conveyor belts funneling them all to one tile at the front. Leave a 2 tile gap on the sides and behind, so no slimes spawn on the other side (they can spawn up to 2 blocks away from slime ground). Go off-screen for a while so slimes can spawn. Then just hit them to skill up. Bonus points if you bind attack to a secondary key (for me "/") and use a piece of carton or smth to keep it stuck on pressed.

This is awesome input, thanks for filling in the gaps for me. I'm definitely gonna build the farm.. didn't even think of respeccing and just not selecting talents. Appreciate the feedback :truelove:

Currently how exp gain work is per hit/action/etc. For Melee & Range, you gain exp per strike. A weaker damage output and fastest swinging/firing is best for grinding. This is the same for mining, a lower mining damage (or minimum required for harder wall/ore) and faster mining speed will yield more exp in return. Vitality is the opposite. You gain exp per kill. It more easier to farm early slime/larva or anything you can one shot and spawn quickly. And finally fishing, you gain exp per catch. Don't matter if it a fish or treasure. It better to fish treasure than wasting time with the fish minigame. 2 lucky ring and glowing bait are recommanded.

This unfortunately make Fishing, Mining, Range & Melee the worse skill to grind for. Also, had to move my character into a hardmode world to speed up Melee & Range, has monster have twice as much hp.

I dunno I feel like melee and ranged are two of the easier skills to level starting from mid-game. But yeah fishing and mining are very tedious.

Oh, ranked them worse to less worse. Melee of course was faster and Ranged felt a bit slower. The other 2 tho, is mostly mindless grinding and not fun. It funny tho, when me and my friend first played, Mining was actually my highest skill then it just stopped, only gaining a few level for mining enough resources for multiple boat/portal/etc.
