lots of impenetrable block circles/ovals in sunken sea?

i'm currently grinding for the phantom spark, and have successfully found 1 broken core room in the sea. since then...ive searched high and low, but haven't had any further luck. i noticed im seeing a lot more impenetrable blocks in large, island-sized circles and ovals in the parts of the sea i am exploring now, rather than where i had first found the string. i'm starting to get worried that maybe these circles mean something isnt loading in properly? i havent gotten anything aside crab islands/regular sized metropolis' in a long time as well.

i'm mostly seeing if this is normal (i hope!), or if anyone else has experienced this before. Hopefully it's nothing too bad, I don't know if I could bare to part with this file!

They're normal. I believe those spots will be replaced with the crystal caverns biome once it's released, but that's just conjecture on my part so take it with a grain of salt.

By the way, the large metropolises with the broken cores spawn at set distances from your core and the one with the string is the most distant one. If you're searching further out than where you found the energy string you're never going to find the other broken cores.
