Rare Mushy gives +24 Food and +5.25 HP /sec for 20sec.... a Golden Heart Berry gives you +22.5 Food, +62.5 max HP, +5.5 HP /sec for 20sec and +21.4% melee dam...
When 2 items give a similar buff (+HP/sec in this case) only the highest single buff counts, so what's happening is the Heart Berry is just overwriting the Mushrooms buff. And the +35 Food would be the same.
Make sense?
edit: Must be honest, it took me a good few minutes of puzzling to figure it out.
The total list of food combinations doesn't matter. Just remember what each ingredient adds to a meal, and you'll be fine.
Higher rarity boosts all the stats of a meal, and talent point bonuses are also shown on the tooltip.
