I'm confused what you mean by "look in wide open spaces" because of that, I keep looking through the vast ocean and explore any land I find, but nothing shows up, is there a specific place to look for them in the sea~?
The ore deposits are not likely to spawn in the walls so look at the wide open spaces (not the sea) in the biome.
Not sure if its a new thing or bound to that area cause for Octarine, I used to find it in open sand space as its being advised. I would say try both on land and in wall. Cause maybe they changed it to have them in walls.
I think the system of drilling ore deposits is a bit silly.. It removes any purpose to and actively discourages adventuring.
The recipes are so expensive lategame mining normally just isn't viable compared to using drills to do the work for you, which is a shame because it's genuinely fun roaming around the map hunting for ores, finding new landmarks as I adventure with friends and wondering what i'll find around every corner, all of that magic is removed once the best way and arguably only viable way to play is putting some drills down and leaving your computer turned on while you do other stuff.
Honestly, I would love to see drills & ore deposits removed from the game but in exchange, make the outerring recipes much, much cheaper.
If I already mined 100 galaxite, scarlet or whatever other ore, I've likely mined all of it, any further mining after that point is typically a repeat of previous events and I've already had fun with my fun with friends exploring the world map; why do I need an extra 800 or more for other items?
it just feels disrespectful to my time and forcing me into using drills, but when I use drills I don't get to explore the map, or fight wild creatures or do anything, the only way I can interact with drills is waiting and doing nothing while they generate ore for me.
I start a lot of new worlds and use the ores to build my base, I am the sort that don't stay on a world for long. Octarine runs out fast once you build teleporters. They are great except for that 20 min wait time to setup. If you have enough of them, you can splurge on some keys and now you have some prettier chests to play with.
