Many locked chests, yet to find a key?
Hello! Sorry for the probably stupid question. I'm very new to the game, but where do I find keys to unlock the various locked chests I have come across? Do I craft them, or are they in containers or chests somewhere and I have just be spectacularly unlucky in my attempts to find one?

Thanks for your time and input~

I have found only one key and it was within the loot of a preset structure - I would not bother trying to find one randomly...

I will at least say that you can indeed craft the keys, but it requires a station built on the fourth workbench. The ores for that workbench, however... are not available until after the three bosses, whos statues surround the core you started at, are defeated.

So for now... pick up those locked chests and store them somewhere at your base, and don't worry about them too much. You'll likely be unable to loot their contents for awhile, but you can at least keep them all in one place until you can.

Seems kinda odd, though, to essentially progress-lock access to what appear to be chests intended for earlier explorers to open, since you can find them in the walls of the easy to break stuff :/

Oh well, thanks for clarifying for me! :)

It is possible to find iron keys rarely in the stone biome through breakable objects, and the same goes for copper keys in the clay biome breakable objects as well as loot chests, as well as the hive! Although I do agree the drop rates are comparably low.

Hope that helps :)

As of today, I have found a total of ONE key XD and 13 chests.....

I am now at a point where I can make keys with the appropriate bench, but man they're expensive to make O__O

The problem with getting keys is,outside making them, they are a rare drop only from the 2X2 breakables. And I've seen less of those then chests. They really need to be added to the 1X1 breakable's pool.

I oddly found one copper key in a wall before I found a locked chest requiring said key. Wasn't paying attention really so I may have hit something next to the wall. Still thanks for the info that they can be crafted later on, found 3 other locked chests needing said keys, so I got curious and checked the general topics, found this and it was helpful. I'm still pretty early game though haven't found tin ore yet, tons of copper though and a few pieces of gold ore in some sand(not that I can smelt it yet).

They will be easy to make later, but the balance problem is that by then nothing in the chests is interesting.

(I assume they will either make keys more findable, or make chests more valuable,)

Yeah, that's a good point. Now I have the ability to make the keys, the stuff in them, hasn't been worth the cost of opening them, except for one.

I agree that the keys should be findable in all the little crates, instead of just the 2x2 ones, it makes a super rare drop even rarer. Seemingly without good justification. As chests massively outnumber the amount of keys you'd need

I have found several Copper Keys while fishing. Just not sure how to use them.

Place a locked copper chest on the ground, interact with it to open it and you can put the key inside, which will turn the chest in to a normal copper chest with some loot. You can then take the loot and pick the chest back up to use as any other chest for your own storage . :D

yeah I wished they changed the chest by 1.0 its been like that for a minute by the time you get the machine to make keys its already no need for it

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
