If you didn't get the swift feather, then I agree with the above comment: just come back later when you have better equipment. In particular, obtaining the grub egg necklace and larva ring would negate the danger of accidentally stepping in a slime puddle when you're trying to dodge King Slime's jumps.
Digging out the ground will not work, since the slime bosses can jump on empty ground or water and will create new ground at that place. Same with building them in, they will just destroy everything in their path. You will have to face that one directly.
If you haven't yet deafeated Ghorm (the racing big bug) and the third mini boss, then you definitely want to wait until you have better equipment and level up your skills some more. Also cook food and craft potions. That stuff can make a huge difference.
Area prep:
Battle Prep:
Gear
At this point you are prepped to literally run around in circles after/while you pop food for a long time shooting slings and thats about it. This will work but takes foreeeeever and the longer you fight the more chances there are to mess up.
You can kinda cheese it by bring it to reset range and hitting it as you chase it back but DO NOT let it rest. Make sure to stay next to it for aggro and keep hitting it or it will heal.
For an easier time:
The above is meant for if you want to do it NOW and not later but if you spend some time in the larva area or killing the caveling shamans to get some decent items to make this fight considerably easier.
Grub neck/ring - set bonus unaffected by slime slow
dropped by monsters in larva area at a low % or the hive mother boss
skirmisher cap - range attk speed%
dropped by cave skirmisher (larva caveling)
Sticky Stick - Long range good early damage
dropped by glurch or found in the breakable slime objects on the ground in slime infested areas
Fireball staff/Shaman skull - This staff alone will carry you and pair it with skull for even better damage
dropped by caveling shaman but at a VERY low rate
