If you're worried about enemies breaking into somewhere I suggest just removing the floor. The normal enemies in this game can't cross one tile gaps.
yea i am gonna either double my fencing or put water or a space around it.
I want to use them to protect my railways: railroad, wall or fence, 2 tiles of removed terrain. The reason for the wall or fence is that some enemies have ranged attacks that the gap in the ground won't stop.
I'm trying to use them to protect my railways so I don't get shot with ranged attacks while in my mine cart. IT's actually happened to me. My plan is to put a wall on both sides of the railway to stop ranged attacks, and then two tiles of empty ground or water to keep melee enemies away.
I'm trying to figure out if the fences will keep enemy ranged attacks away, for one thing :)
So I just did a farm for my cave mobs with some larva in the middle. I put a scarlett fence up then realized they can shoot over it thus I went with walls after.
