Yes - A Poisonous Sickle, a Caveling Hood with Ivy's Pants and Chest, a Polished Gold Crystal Necklace, a Mold Ring and Sky Ring, and a Toxic Defender.

Then in skills - in Mining take Miner's Strength. In Running take Keeping Tempo. In Melee take Building Anger, Fast and Furious and Strength of the Ancients. In Ranged take Amplified Precision. In Gardening take Eat You Vegatables, Thorny Weapons, Thorny Skin and Potent Poison, In Fishing take Power of Omega-3!, In Cooking take The Smell of Food.

If you haven't got that far then a Runesong and Scarlet Armour with similar accessories (you can drop the Sky Ring for another Mold) is more than adequate and you can drop Potent Poison from the Gardening tree. :Caveling:

Edit: Caveat - Ranged is WAY stronger with Sunken Sea items from what I've tested so far.

For normal difficulty, high defense goes a long way. Defense seems to be a simple 1 defense = 1 damage reduction, but your life expectancy scales exponentially. The difference between taking 200 damage and 180 damage means very little, but the difference between 60 and 40 damage is huge.

For body armor, crafted items are the best defense options. Look out for defense oriented necklaces, rings and off hands as well. Cook anything with carrocks for a powerful 5 minute defense buff, and keep defense potions handy for bosses.

Defense also gets buffed from crafting skill. A wood farm gives tons of crafting material to power through the low levels quickly, but the high levels get incredibly expensive per level.

Close, but not quite. Only 75% of armour contributes to damage reduction.

(Base Damage - Armor × 0.75) × (1 - Damage Reduction Against Bosses) × (1 - Shield Damage Reduction) × Randomized Damage Range

I will add to what you said though with - always reinforce for tough fights.
