Rails and base security
Currently setting up railways creates holes in your base defenses that allows mobs to wander in and around, since you can't overlap rails over spikes or under doors/gates. One workaround I've found is creating U-bends in the railway system where I loop the railway around a set of spikes, and that works well for managing slimes. I think something like a gate for rails that opens and closes automatically for carts would be a nice addition to the game.

Honestly I would just take a hoe and slop up all the slimes around where you are if that is a option?

I built my base pretty far away from my core, in the middle of the ocean. I am wondering what my portal limit is.

Previously I built rails to end 2 squares from my door on my previous base. (That was before portals.) At that door I had a small room with 3x3 spikes to another door. If you clear the slime spawns you won't have a issue at all imo.

I don't want to spoil things for you because I don't know how far you are. If you have been in the ocean biome you'd know the dungeons i am talking about. i built a farm into another and a museum I am working on in another.

I would just clean your slimes up around you. Even then the only slimes that are aggressive near the core are spiky but unless someone knows how to keep them from spawning specifically I don't have an answer to that. I used to have 5 slimes in my base just wander around - not the spiky ones. The others are innocent until provoked.

I've had a few drinks tonight - sorry if I am too chatty mate.

Can bases actually get attacked? The core is surrounded by slime and fungus tiles, so it will never get hit by an enemy raid. The raiding mob types simply don't spawn close enough.

In my world, caveling raids chased me to the dirt biome and began slaughtering every slime and shrooman in sight along Ghorm's trail, eventually leading to my base. As long as I keep my doors closed, I get free slimes and seeds. Managed to keep larva fatties away by walling them off or they'd eat torches like a candy trail. Infected cavelings have decimated forest cavelings everywhere and they concentrated by the dozens.

Would like the ability to place rails in doorways so I can vroom vroom and zoom zoom. I don't use portals or teleport egg thingies. I already placed rails everywhere, might as well take the scenic route.

Does everyone put their main base at the core?

It isn't feasible to get rid of all the slime tiles; maybe the patch nearby the core where Glurch spawns but Ghorm's tunnel remains a constant problem if you ever intend to rematch Ghorm. I don't mean to say slimes are a real and constant threat and we need walls to keep them out, but that I don't like how building railways means that there's an open path through to your base. This lets Big Larva go on a hungry caterpillar spree nomming on torches all the way to your base.

I just want to keep my base tidy and secure, and railways complicates things, though I have found ways around it if you look at the screenshot I posted.
