Your map's orientation will be unique but on my map "north" is the Clay Caves and "south" is the Forbidden Ruins. What I did was build just 2 rails going right to the center and through each. They cut down on so much time its crazy. I recommend keeping a minecart in your inventory to use rails rather than leaving one placed down on each, that way if you die you won't have to manually walk back.
If you don't mind spoilers I can offer a couple more reasons why you'll want to set up rails.
My luckiest drops were the 2 fire staffs from the caveling shamans
and the purple necklace from a purple slime mob.
