...for the slime debuff, there might be a piece of jewelry, that eliminates the effect.^^
As far as the torch eaters, take out their spawning ground anywhere you want your torches not knocked over, it keeps them from spawning and gives you the material to setup a mob farm to farm them later for mats and drops.
- Recall Idol (consumable; teleport to Core); Kill Ghorm
- Rail and cart (lay down train tracks and ride fast in a minecart); Tin tier
- Boat (travel on water); Octarine tier
- Standing portals (After initial setup, freely teleport between any two portals); Octarine tier
- Dune buggy (cars go vroom); Galaxite tier
Once you're done with the Clay Caves (i.e. have killed Ghorm and the Hive Mother), you'll hardly need to return to them. After the larvae, enemies seem to go back to ignoring your torches, so you can freely plop them down again. In the meantime, the larvae can only hit what they can reach. If you place bridges or ground tiles that aren't connected to "mainland", they'll be safe from bugs.
Poison isn't a problem if you aren't getting hit. Engage at range or learn to dodge/block. There are potions you can craft to remove poison and a necklace which provides immunity. If it's such a problem, take measures against it. (Consider this when you explore mold biomes.)
