If that's not the maker's style though, I'd say make it so that it gives a whole buttload for a while but slowly diminish to a low but reasonable yield that never ends. Maybe the large ore sprite could even change! :0
Yep. They were bugged originally. The developers fixed the drill issue and doubled the amount of ore in boulders with the Sunken Sea Patch.

you underestimate my power!
It's a single player game... whether or not someone wants to cheat, or not, has no bearing on anyone else's experience. And devs should know that not everyone will play the game the way they envisioned it, but despite that, the player can still love the game... This mindset that the devs intended a certain way to play/complete it and then applying a heavy hand to force them to do so is a good way to kill a game, especially over such a trivial function as a resource toggle/bar.
