Ofc the game is fighting against my torches... maybe enemies are even hitting them on purpose. But slimes sometimes spread on them and cause them to pop out.
do you really need other light sauce in late game?
witness my level 10 light food buff
Starbound is a pretty good analogy, the light items went in the back slot where a bunch of other utility items went like EPPs for surviving hostile planets. There were EPP augments that added light but you'd have to choose between that or an augment with a combat or other utility effect. Then there were items you could hold on your tool bar to provide light, or would replace other equipment slots. It's all pretty similar to what Core Keeper offers, you can hold a lantern in the offhand, or hold a torch/flower in your main hand, or equip one or more rings that glow, or eat food that provides a glow, or stack several of the above for a brighter light.
Terraria has a light pet slot, but they are pretty useless until some of the hardmode ones. Generally you need to hold/place a torch to see for most of the game, or swing a weapon/tool that emitted light.
Soon as I started farming, I never used the lantern again. I get double the light radius eating food. After some farming (about 2.5 hours combined), I have 2000 RL minutes of +4 glow. That's over 30 RL hours.
+2 glow for the cost of your offhand slot is hardly worth it. I'll take a 70% damage reduction over dismal lighting any day.
It's almost like there's an incentive to strategize and itemize, like, you know, with nearly every RPG game. Trading a permanent slot for glow versus damage or mitigation is what makes it interesting in the first place. Having a game where you can have everything at once with no detriment or decision making is boring. Right now there are substantial amounts of sources for glow and you can either invest fully into it to reach +15 glow or you go all the way into mining and combat, offsetting it with torches and food (which you will be chugging frequently anyway).
Playing with two friends of mine the past few nights, we have literally thousands of glow food on hand, plus other buff foods.
