If you fish in mold, likewise you can get mold immunity.
Mining speed boost from the starting area is most useful when you don't have much mining speed, but it also becomes useful latter in the zones when you take a long time to break in... like breaking into the larva region.
Also, remember, the more you fish, the more points you spend in fish, the easier fishing gets.
This is one of the few ones where you want to take the first 15 points and spend them on the first 3 options instead of trying to get to the bottom as fast as powerful, as you need to make fishing easier to make fishing worthwhile.
Look at your crops, see the buffs you can get? For every one of those, there is a fish that does that buff better... except glow, there is no glow fish.
Look at your rings and pendants, for every one of those stats, there is a fish that gives you that ability briefly, freeing a slot... except glow, there is no glow fish.
So, fish just give you more options, you could ignore them the entire time. Me, I'm going to get 100% dodge chance, and that requires fish.
Even at the start you could use the mining bonus fish to help mine the dirt area and explore faster.
Slime resistance makes the first and third bosses easier. First boss is early, so certainly not "latter".
Fish starts rough, once you fish enough it becomes easy.
Fish starts worthwhile, in latter game it becomes awesome.
Some people seem to view this as a bad idea.
The skill tree is useful for certain situations and necessary for certain builds.
The only problem is that if you aren't going into one of those rare situations or have one of those builds that require you to fish, fishing is a lot of extra work for what you get. Doesn't mean it isn't worth putting in the effort, but just be warned that it requires effort, unlike most of the rest of the game.

If you do have a situation that requires you to fish, then just be aware that you might have to go a bit out of your way to deal with the fishing. If you have a build that requires you to fish, then just be aware that it will require a lot of effort compared to other playstyles.
In the early game, I was spending something like 1-2 hours of fishing per like 30 minutes of playing, which gives a rough idea of how absurd the cost of an early game dodge build is. This was after spending like 20-60 hours fishing with a wood farm to get the dodge necklace and my fishing skill up. (I maxed my fishing before I got the necklace, btw, so if you have good luck, it might take you far less time. I might have spent over 60 hours since I was also gardening and cooking at the time, so the 60 is based on me resting in bed (sick) with a controller and just tapping mostly by sound until I ran out of rods, repairing with a wood farm, then going back to fishing).
I have since set things up to make it way way easier for me to get the fish and food I need.
Clay biome has rings that give you +defense, but you can easily get better rings.
Forest biome has rings that give you +fishing, but that is in the forest.
Everything else (outside of running) is moving towards faster payouts, unlocking more of the map, providing you gear, and beating the game.
Fishing feels more rewarding because of the time commitment and the fishing looted is overall better than what can be gained from killing or farming stuff.
