Is fishing worth it?
It feels slow, and not worth it to me but im wondering if it gets better im using an iron rod and just trying to grab the guppys from the start

If you fish in clay, you can get fish that let you ignore slime slowing, this makes fighting the giant grub easier as you don't need the larva set.

If you fish in mold, likewise you can get mold immunity.

Mining speed boost from the starting area is most useful when you don't have much mining speed, but it also becomes useful latter in the zones when you take a long time to break in... like breaking into the larva region.

Also, remember, the more you fish, the more points you spend in fish, the easier fishing gets.

This is one of the few ones where you want to take the first 15 points and spend them on the first 3 options instead of trying to get to the bottom as fast as powerful, as you need to make fishing easier to make fishing worthwhile.

Look at your crops, see the buffs you can get? For every one of those, there is a fish that does that buff better... except glow, there is no glow fish.

Look at your rings and pendants, for every one of those stats, there is a fish that gives you that ability briefly, freeing a slot... except glow, there is no glow fish.

So, fish just give you more options, you could ignore them the entire time. Me, I'm going to get 100% dodge chance, and that requires fish.

So your answer boils down to "IT GETS GOOD LATER" which means no its not generally worth it

It gets BETTER latter.

Even at the start you could use the mining bonus fish to help mine the dirt area and explore faster.
Slime resistance makes the first and third bosses easier. First boss is early, so certainly not "latter".

Fish starts rough, once you fish enough it becomes easy.
Fish starts worthwhile, in latter game it becomes awesome.

Well not really.. At any point the extra buffs from fishing are useful, and the fact that the skill tree helps with combat also make it worth it.

The entire game boils down to "effort is rewarded".
Some people seem to view this as a bad idea.
Fishing isn't really that great except for specific situations/builds. Like dodge builds absolutely need to fish because that is the only way to make a dodge build work.

The skill tree is useful for certain situations and necessary for certain builds.

The only problem is that if you aren't going into one of those rare situations or have one of those builds that require you to fish, fishing is a lot of extra work for what you get. Doesn't mean it isn't worth putting in the effort, but just be warned that it requires effort, unlike most of the rest of the game.

===

If you do have a situation that requires you to fish, then just be aware that you might have to go a bit out of your way to deal with the fishing. If you have a build that requires you to fish, then just be aware that it will require a lot of effort compared to other playstyles.

In the early game, I was spending something like 1-2 hours of fishing per like 30 minutes of playing, which gives a rough idea of how absurd the cost of an early game dodge build is. This was after spending like 20-60 hours fishing with a wood farm to get the dodge necklace and my fishing skill up. (I maxed my fishing before I got the necklace, btw, so if you have good luck, it might take you far less time. I might have spent over 60 hours since I was also gardening and cooking at the time, so the 60 is based on me resting in bed (sick) with a controller and just tapping mostly by sound until I ran out of rods, repairing with a wood farm, then going back to fishing).

I have since set things up to make it way way easier for me to get the fish and food I need.

What exactly do you have to do to get the dodge necklace? It's one of the few items I don't have

There are two that you can get. Both from fishing. The better dodge one is found fishing in the dirt biome by fishing at around a 1% drop rate. The other one is from the stone biome at around a 0.4% drop rate. The stone biome one gives better stats overall, but lower dodge.

Clay biome has rings that give you +defense, but you can easily get better rings.
Forest biome has rings that give you +fishing, but that is in the forest.

well sorry some people would like to do other things then play a boring minigame thats hard for a very long time for minor rewards until an absurd amount of time later

*shrug* Your loss. There is no game for everyone. Skill based minigames reward those who put the time and effort in to get good. Welcome to why Dark Souls and Elden Ring are popular. Trying to change the formula to suit your needs is not the solution; rather it is recognizing what you want out of a game and going for that instead. I like skill based minigames. Fishings right up my alley.

Worth it yep , esp for melee user , rock jaw fished from dirt biome cooked gives 15% melee dmg ....

Fishing isn't bad, it is just very time inefficient, especially early game. It gives you good bonuses, but farming literarly everything else (mining, gardening or just randomly killing everything) simply feels faster...
ICountFrom0 Mar 29, 2022 @ 9:43pm
Make a slime trap, let it build up a while, let your farm grow, and between clearing your slimetrap and planting the crops, fish.

Not what he was talking about. He means if you put 2 hours in other skills, they boost faster and produce more valuable things earlier. With fishing, you have to get the right fish for the recipe you want which is random. You need to find a spot with plenty of nodes, then you need gear and time to hopefully get what you want.

Everything else (outside of running) is moving towards faster payouts, unlocking more of the map, providing you gear, and beating the game.

Fishing feels more rewarding because of the time commitment and the fishing looted is overall better than what can be gained from killing or farming stuff.
