How to use hive mother scanner? Also larva walls?

Is there a trick to this I'm too dense to figure out? I've defeated the first two bosses and I've crafted the scanner to find the hive mother. I carry it on my hotbar. How do I "use" it? It's been several hours and I've been running around the clay caves and it doesn't do anything. Also, I can't break through the larva walls I've found. My mining level is currently 51. Do I need a higher mining level or a better pickaxe than the iron one I have? Please advise. Thank you!

From what I know, if you want to break hive walls, you'll want at least two rings that you can get: One from mining in the Stone area, one from mining in the clay area. That should boost your mining by a decent amount. Combined with the Iron Pickaxe should hopefully get you enough mining.

If I remember correctly, you just 'use' it like any other consumable and it'll mark her on your map.

Larva walls are too tough at your stage in the game to break without using two large bombs per wall

Mining level (the skill) doesn't need to be high to get past hive walls. The items you use are only thing that matters. Also you need to hold the mining button for very long time, as if you let go even little the wall will restore itself. (Just a note i used word "hold" for mining, not to confuse with spam clicking which might not work so well)

Hive wall should break in about 4 seconds with iron pick and 2 mining rings.

The set bonus of the mining rings will get you through it.

Some of the higher walls do require more hits. You can let go of the mining button, but the wall will heal quickly. It isn't an instant heal, but it can easily outpace your mining if you aren't careful. On the other hand, that is an easy way to level mining with a fist and a lot of patience (mining exp is per hit), hitting a wall you can damage for the exp, but with a high enough regeneration rate that you won't have to worry about breaking it.
