But you need iron pickaxe at minimum. 2 rings +14 mining also helps, even better if you get the set bonus but it's not needed.
If you meant the barrier wall then that opens when you press E, it can't be broken with pick.

The core does tell you which direction your azeos wilderness resides as well. So what you did might be a pretty uncommon behaviour? Maybe. I don't know. It's open world esk and people may choose to go the opposite direction simply because they were told that isn't where they should go.
I haven't tried getting my mining power up to 550 or 600 yet, but that might also do it. As grass blocks actually have something like a 100-200 mining power limit before you can damage them. Mold might be the same. This isn't like those super durable hive walls. Grassy actually needs a minimum mining damage before it can break. I just forget what that minimum was.
