Wrestling Career or Booking Career?
What's the difference and are they connected at all? Also am I supposed to edit "Newbie Nate" if I want to do the career with a custom character?

Newbie nate is often the go to to make a custom character but you can use any of the characters and replace them, my nate is still running around and is like... 15 years into his career lol.

Wrestling career is when you control 1 wrestler, it goes until you either retire, get forcefully retired, or die. You wont' be able to pick another wrestler until one of those things happen.

Booking career is when you play as a manager of a promotion, You get to set up the matches and hire and fire the wrestlers.

Both modes take place in the same save and simulation, So while my Newbie Nate has been doing his own thing for 15 years I've played 2 different wrestlers and a short spree of booking.

So if you advance time in one save (booking or wrestling) it will advance them in the other, but you can also technically control things a little bit extra by swapping back and forth (tho personally I just stay on one mode at a time)

Just an edit to add: As the cpu wrestlers die and retire new random ones will join to refill the ranks

No, the ??? characters you can unlock by just meeting them in career mode (meet might even mean just being on the same screen as them on the street or backstage tbh, all mine have been unlocked for so long i'm not 100% sure), It shouldn't take long to unlock pretty much all of them.

the replacement characters are just forever randomly generated i think to make sure you don't run out of wrestlers

If you get the WECCL mod, you can also just add new characters if you don't want to overwrite anyone.

Is it difficult to set up?

Click "Subscribe" on the mod page in Workshop, then select Play Modded when you open the game from your game library. Creating new characters will be available in the new wrestler search screen in the roster.

That sounds easy enough. As a new player, is the game worth playing vanilla? I see there are all sorts of cool arenas and characters I can download but I guess I need the WEECL thing first.

Modded when you have WECCL (Which most mods need) stores on a separate save file, so you can easily try both.

Personally at least using WECCL on its own doesn't do much but add quality of life stuff like character creating. If you want to use other mods its honestly up to you.
