How to break submissions/counter??

Dude I love this game, but, I freaking hate how submissions and counter attacks works in this game. I was playing with a character with high skill against a guy with way less skill than me, I almost killed him, since it was a hardcore match. I had like 95% of my hp and he was with 0%. He starts a submission, he restores hp until like 7% and even though I was mashing all the buttons, my guy couldn't break the submission and I lost.

I don't mind losing, but I hate when some stupid stuff like that happens. So my question is:

How do I break a submission or properly do a counter attack? The manual states some things that actually don't work.

this is in the enclosed instruction book. you use movement inputs to break holds, you want to be holding opposite what your opponent is holding. watch the animations of your wrestler to see the effects. it works the same as the aggressor.

mashing buttons while grappled moves you in the direction you are holding your movement input. this often sets up a conflict of interest in the defender, because the attacker will generally be holding in the direction of the ropes. you often have to let the aggressor lock in their hold and do more damage in order to shimmy over for a rope break.

please read the instructions when you have the chance. i've got to give it to mdicky for mostly keeping it up to date.
