So im in the tutorial where it says to whip the coach to the corner, every time I grab him and aim at the corner it just pushes him to the ropes??

are you grabbing him from behind? If so, hit one of the bumpers (or l1 or whatever button is assigned to changing positions) to grab him from the front. It gives you more control over the whips.

If that isn't the issue, are you holding the direction while throwing him?

I managed to do it, I was grabbing him from the front, I just found it difficult to aim at the corner
