Protect the Guardsman is trash
This mission type has two major flaws, the first and more minor to me is that it makes no sense. Since when would Grey Knights give a rats ass bout guardsman. These guys are suppose to be "Hush Hush" they would be duty bound to kill these guardsman just for seeing them. This however pales in comparison for reason two.

A HUGE issue is this mission type is just no fun. I love this game because it makes me fell like a steamroller, smashing and devastating enemies. Not always easy, but always fun. This mission just seems like a chore. Running around "Not Smashing", "Not Devastating Enemies" just babysitting some useless guardsman that are below my notice not only in lore, but in the game setup as well.

Imagine this game if all the mission types were similar in scope and enjoyment as these... this game would already be on permanent 95% off steam sale. It's just that boring and annoying.

Not a big fan of save scumming, but this single mission type (which seems to pop up about 40-50% of the time with each bloom) makes me save scum just to get viable mission types now. /emote head_slap

I like the guarsman mission.
in all other mission Types you just run from one enemy group to another and try to kill them before the even can react. Which is not that bad. But gets old.
So i appreciate a Missiontype where you have to split and the enemy will do something.
Feels more like Xcom

The mission is cool, the deed bonus is stupid. Hard to protect the scared guardsman who run into enemy bullets.

Yeah, either the deed needs to change or the guardsman AI tweaked to hunker down if suppressed / overwatched.

So the deed - do you need to protect all the guardsmen? Or is it some number of them? It's really not clear from the description. But protecting all of them seems literally impossible.

to my understanding you get 3 req. for the deed and when 1 guardsmen falls you you only get 2 so you dont need to safescum like a madman to save all.
on harder difficulties and in the late game its impossible to save all anyway

You don't need to protect all the guardsmen. I can't remember the exact number. You are allowed to let 4 or 5 die I think. That said, I couldn't even keep all the servitors safe. One survived so I succeeded the mission but I didn't even come close to being able to protect all the guards. They were just too far apart to give each group adequate protection. If I put one knight on each group they won't be able to handle the attackers, but if I put multiple knights then at least one of the three groups will have no defense whatsoever. Seems like you need a librarian if you want to be able to move your whole party around fast enough to defend them. The bonus objective here seems to be tougher than the bonus objective to use only 3 knights on a bloomspawn mission.

I'm with the OP on this one. I avoid this mission if at all possible. The difficulty of the bonus objective seems too high to be worth doing it for extra requisitions. It encourages my knights to take damage to draw fire away from the guardsmen and that will just result in them getting more injuries than normal. Doing the mission doesn't even cause a bloom reduction because its on planets with 0 bloom. I can't see any up-side to this mission at all. Its just worse than doing other missions in every way.

I just played one of those missions for the first time and I thought it was a blast. I did not take the bonus and I let most of the guardsmen die. It would not have been possible to not let a bunch of them die nor would it have been fun. Just use them strategically as cannon fodder and take the easy W.

They dont give a damn about guardsmen, thats why you shouldn't either. The only thing that matters is that one servitor survies, so you can extract from him what you need and then dissapear. That was the lore part.

Its basically the opposite of bloom hives where you could rush the mega plant and then beam out. Now you have to kill all of the enemy and survive with these peasants as your only tool.

Some things that made the missions easier for me: taking over the enemy for 3 turns stratagem. "50% crazy" grenades, and last but not least - environmental damage.

You can heal the servitors with tech marine and the purify stratagem works on the soldiers as well. Keep them alive a sec longer. Good job guardsman.

Also Guardsmen do .... sligthly.. more damage to the enemy when the enemys armor and cover is gone and/or they are weakened.

Difficult or not (and I hate these escort missions in any strategy game), they have to mind scrub the IG after so it really makes little sense.

The bonus only cares about six dead imperial guards. You can straight up ignore one of the three sectors and still have two guardsmen to spare. It's not that hard.
