Edit: to follow up, it depends a little on what you're looking for. If you want a turn based strategy game, this one is pretty fun. If you want a real time strategy game I'd suggest dawn of war 1 or 2 (3 was kinda bad). For shooter/action type game get space marine. If you want a left 4 dead type game keep an eye on darktide, that one is supposed to release later this year.
For Warhammer (fantasy) you could consider one of the total war games or vermintide
I'd personally suggest the first two Dawn of War games as first contact to Wh40k games. They are quite old at this point, but I figure they get the atmosphere a tad better (the little details like reminding you that "cowards die in disgrace" if you trying to quit the game :D ).
But - 6 hours in - from what I can see from this game, it seems that the devs put a lot of effort in the presentation of the campaign and it seems (to me) more interessting that the first two mentioned games. So if you want a new game to try: Go for it, try this one.
You haven't, there is no interconnecting story other than general WH lore (which you can gather via youtube, the WH40K-Wiki, books etc.). Also keep in mind that the majority of WH turn based games are pretty trash. So yes, this is one is great, albeit quite hard if you did not have any contact with the genre before. You can also have a look at Battlesector and Mechanicus. The rest you can safely ignore for now (give or take) if you are just getting started.
By the way, Fatshark (the Vermintide guys) will soon release a Vermintide-like game in the WH40k Universe. It's called Darktide and looks quite promising already :- )
Personally, I wouldn't touch Chaos Gate Daemonhunters yet (I'm a loyal fan of the Chaos Gate released in the late 90's).
For strategy games something like Dawn of War 1 for RTS games and Mechanicus for turn based games seems like a good starting point as well. DoW explains itself pretty well and Mechanicus is pretty noob friendly since it has only two factions.
Decide for yourself, you always have a 2 hour test drive which is enough for the tutorial and 2-3 Missions afterwards. If you like turn based tactical games this game is absolutely worth a shot.
I don't know much about WH40K but I can enjoy the game for what it is, an tactical turn based game which actually let me forget time while playing.
As far as for an introduction into the WH40k universe then yeah I guess, but it doesn’t attempt to explain the setting to you so you’ll likely want to look a few things up yourself for an overview. But then most games don’t and I don’t think it really matters.
My only caveat is the artsyle during cutscenes, while beautifully coloured, the faces are more in line with Arcane (Riot Games/Netflix) than your typical WH40k style of artwork. It’s definitely WH40k but it does take some adjusting to.
Good game, with some nice touches to the XCOM formula - you can always refund if you find it isn’t for you.
