Isnt Shoehorning technology into roles it wasnt meant for accurate for the United States? Adding offensive armaments to the m113, adding armor and weapons to the HMMWV, giving platforms such as the Kiowa and Littlebird rockets and miniguns. Point is that war ALWAYS changes the need and usage of equipment, and because 1989 HOT is purely fictional, none of us can say for certain what equipment could end up where.

Pizzamovies, sorry. Eugen has it right. The USAF doesn't risk AC-130s in conventional, large scale combat operations, which is why they are flown by special ops squadrons. They don't operate like the standard ATO package. They would not have done so in the game's 1989 scenario either.

Its a very useful platform, but it isn't appropriate for this game.

Not really - at least, not in the way you mean. A HMMWV outfitted with an ATGM is not meant to slug it out with enemy armor, for example.

Likewise, an AC-130 (which is, when you get down to the bare bones, a cargo-transport armed with cannons) not going to be sent into a theatre to get into dogfights with enemy interceptors.
