I'm in my 40s, and I'm not even a boomer - that's my parent's generation. ;)
ANYWAY, the game basically *needs* to be played at max zoomed-out level, as gorgeous as it is when you move the camera close to the action. Think of it as a table-top wargame (which is where Eugen's inspiration comes from). You can still watch saved Replays for all the spectacle and flash after the battle is over. ;)
Focus on the grand picture first - that is, know that tanks are primarily the spearhead of any offensive push, know that infantry should be in cover as much as possible (buildings/forests), and know that Recon is absolutely critical for situational awareness.
Use "Smart Orders" to have the AI perform basic tasks to lessen the micro. For example, you can designated artillery to automatically counter-battery enemy artillery when the enemy fires, or you can have artillery hold fire until the enemy enters a certain area you designate.
Don't forget you can slow or pause the game and still give orders to your units.
Settings switch move order is attack move.
Costly tank. right click a recon to follow that tank. right click a spaag to follow that tank. Support tank right click to follow the spaag.
Move that costly tank around. while your cheap units move by AI with seize.
It just depends on your practice regimen.
1). hotkey things.. example click your tanks and hold in left ctrl and 1 key.
Then if you press key 1 you will automatic select the tank.
And if you double click 1 you jump to the unit where it is fysicaly in the world.
If you do this to many units you can quick jump to their location fast and see what goes on. ( i recommend to zoom a bit out it give a better overview )
This is actually very helpfull regarding your artillery since after you shoot 4 shots you want too move your long range artillery a bit away from the area so it will not be counter sniped.
So if you give some units the above feature then you can fast jump to them by double pressing 1-9 keys.
Maybe divide the keys like 1-3 is for units on the left side of the map, and 4-8 is the right side, and 9 is your artillery.
2). use the Q key. Select example your tanks and press Q and give it a waypoint somewhere you like it to go.. When doing this the tanks will stop and shoot when they are in range of the enemy. This is very usefull especially for vehicles that cannot fire while moving and you can then look at other units while it does it thing.
( example vehicles that shoot missiles need to stop to fire )
3). park your vehicles behind a forrest in an ambush. Your vehicles do not need to see everything ( and everything do not need to see you ) so you can kind of park and forget about vehicles sometimes and just let them shoot at the enemy if someone get near.
Just be carefull that the enemy do not flank you and shoot you in the side or rear.
And in general also be aware of artillery fire, sometimes you have to move a little.
4). you dont have to see and follow your units.. Give them a command and jump to the next
unit. Maybe only focus your attention at units that are advancing such as tanks they are much more likely to run into the enemy than units hiding in the forrest or parked.
SO example send forwared 2x4 tanks with the Q key command. If you run into allot of enemys then quickly press G and click somewhere behind your tanks then they will retreat in reverse and point the front of the tank towards the enemy.
5). use the terrain, some maps there is some height difference.. its a VERY strong defence to park your tanks a bit back from the edge of a ridge so when the enemy drive over the top they have 0 chance to shoot back before they are dead.
6). avoid fighting long range with tanks vs apc's that have missiles, its better to park your tank behind somehing like a forrest and wait for the enemy to come closer.
7). waypoints.. select example a tank and then hold in left shift and click on the map x places.. now your tank will follow the route. You can also do this with planes or helicopters. Its is very usefull to "program" a helicopter to fly to x location, unload, and then fly away again. That reduce the amount of micro management.
8). some units can conqure an area on them self.. They have a special button conquest or defensive that you can put on top of an area and then the AI computer will attack or defend on it self.. and they are actually pretty good.
Cause the recon is more fragile but it still discover hidden infantry before the tank get into the range of AT weapons.
Of course if L.O.S is blocked on desired path, the tank can run into shortrange AT fire from infantry.
If recon goes first and the tank follow the recon, it get 80% killed before the tank can react you can react and you have to micro them again.
Dude, your grandparents are boomers(true story), ffs, lol.
30 year old boomer...don't do that to yourself. Might be some truth as prevailing opinion tends to skip a generation like hair loss.
"Micro-ing" is a only a problem if you get behind the enemy in moves, in real life or game. What to do is change your pace and not rush about, chasing. Regroup and re-establish your own position. The best APM gamer I know wins wins 57-75 apm, no bs. So you don't have to be fast at micro to win. Read the map, find choke points and turn your enemy's efforts into your advantage. Don't quit. Rage is for the inept.
1. On huge battles i give half of the troops to AI Control.
2. When battles happen i set the speed to slow to be able to keep up with the situation and have enough time to watch the battles.
3. I use Artillery only in the automated orders like Free Fire or Counter Artillery.
4. When i have several units in an area i use the AI Autocommands to attack positions or get a defence position. Ai do a bether job.
5. When in Defensive Mode, tanks automaticall, drive into cover whwn facing overwhelming enemys. Give me more time to see that something happens and react.
6. I play in easy mode.
Starting to recognize the maps and then appealing the best openings for it.
takes some time, but eventually you kinda know what is "generally" needed for what.
WARNO is the best place to start due to the distinct weapon platforms.
PACK is probably the fastest to learn for most people, due to the more uniform equipment sets (2 countries compared to NATO's 4.)
The scale is also much less, unit wise. The new patch made the pace even slower.
