Army General (AG) Campaign Thoughts and Opinions
Setup

I got defeated as NATO on the first Army General campaign. Defeat tactically is not itself a bad thing as in defeat you can make victories. I think that is what the first battle for NATO in the AG campaign is a good demonstration of at least.

Further Context

Your force is numerically outnumbered and does not have air superiority, as if you try to deploy the air the enemy SAMS intercept them which is a cool mechanic. The battle is difficult as it should be, as I am playing on hard and the PACT has a numerical disadvantage after all. Though even in my defeat where I defeated 230 units out of however many whilst only losing 18 tanks out of my total of 120 units lost. To me that defeat is minor at most but the game gave me a major defeat and 5 fatigue points.

Conclusion

Perhaps the system for calculating battle results and fatigue shouldn't be based on command points (which is how they won which is fair enough as a win condition) but rather based on the ratio of units lost to total units deployed which in terms of the grander strategy is much more important for determining the outcome of a conflict.

The start of the campaign is hard.
You start with an army that have allot of good tanks and that is your nato strength.
The way to win as nato is to hide behind things and make the enemy come closer and then shorten the distance of the fighting. The problem is the enemy have allot of cheap apc's with missiles and you dont want to fight them out in the open, so close the distance.
Example use your mortar to drop smoke and then drive closer and wait or drive out of the forrest and shoot 1-2 times and reverse back.. repeat.
Also you need to focus on counter artillery fire and shoot 3 shots and then move your artillery.

It is possible to win and make the enemy suffer allot of losses.
you can win the first 2 attacks but then the enemy try to encircle you.. when they do this retreat to the nearby city ( black shield ) and then you want to defend via your infantry rather than tanks.. and park your tanks and vehicles just below the main road that goes though the map.. And then again just wait for the enemy.

Now you will get your fist extra army in the south and bonus units like artillery.
And a bit later you get all the forces in the south on the campaign map, and then the war turn.

You can also try to send a unit on the campaign map that cut off the enemys border so all the advancing units get cut off.. Once this happen they will pull back to own territory.

I really dislike the air aspect in Army General Campaign map, I cannot send my SEAD planes ahead to clear the skies, then send my F-15s to help battle the hordes of T-80s, once their AA is in place, the whole battlefield is dominated by layers of them and it gets impossible to send any air support at all to any battle despite having plenty available, seems to be no random factor when trying to get through air supp, it just wins every time, and even if you mange to get your SEAD planes through, they are only AA oriented and cannot bomb tanks and you will always lose 1 plane each time even when getting through, so 2 planes lost for two layers of AA before the battle even begins as I just tried, the whole SEAD squadron you get only has 12 planes... that's where I'm at in turn 9 of the Fulda campaign as NATO on Elite. Going well on the ground and barely holding the line, but kinda giving up on continuing, very hard 70+ T80 spam battle ahead and feels really stupid to not have any chance of air support at all, rather wait for the game mechanic to change by now, it's so stupid it must at some point... tired of not being able to use my air power, which should be one of my advantages as NATO :( We need more than one spot for air in all battles, air big advantage is being able to quickly join any battle, this is not reflected with only one spot...

Other than that I love Army General, can probably get even better but absolutely my favorite gameplay style, also as veteran of all the long and hard SD2 Campaigns on the Eastern Front in Poland :)
