WARNO

The real problem of the game is the planes
Deliberately provocative title, let me explain.

A player of the wargame series since day one (and RUSE before), I've long been a proponent of adding planes to wargames (and later WARNO)

After several hundred hours on EE, AB, RD and WARNO, I started to wonder if the real problem of wargame (and WARNO) balance did not come from the planes.

I'm quite a fan of divisions, which bring real realism to the level of units, and don't turn into Wargame RD which has become a 10v10 sandbox with 50,000 units on the map without any sense. (but who has met with real success).

The addition of aircraft marginalized the use of helicopters, which had an important role in WEE, were vulnerable to AA.

So I know removing the planes would probably be silly (and you'd be right), but that's my point.

but the reduction in the missile range update shows that there is a problem with the planes

He have a point actually. Best implementation of planes would be like in Armored Brigade (much more realistic wargame than RD) -- player can use only strike planes, no ASF, and he is not control them directly -- only making a mark for attack, and then aircraft under AI control will attack everything around mark. It is realistic because no land forces commander have acces to ASFs and ASF do not fight in 5-7kms, modern air combat have larger distances.

Kinda meta kill. Some kind of rock paper scissors principle have to be in WARNO.

What role does Aircraft have currently in WARNO?

If you wont add completely off map striking like tactical Nukes, strategic bombing, why use aircraft you cant micro?

Aircraft and Arty have same tasks.

The counterS of Aircraft are?
The counter of Arty is?

Planes were a bad addition to the WG series. They have been used almost exclusively to punish flanking/maneuvering or offensive pushes.

I agree totally that they also effectively rendered helicopters obsolete. Planes do the same thing as helicopters but faster and with far more damage.

Eugen claims that they know the scale of their own game but I vehemently disagree with them. If they truly understood the scale of their game, jets would never have been added. They are just too powerful and too fast to be represented in a way that is balanced without support deck players complaining about them not instantly annihilating entire armies in one attack run.

Eugen claims that systems like the Patriot are out of the game's scale, but then adds things like the Mirage 4 strategic bomber, which is exactly the sort of plane that long range anti-bomber radar AA would be used against. Without planes, there would actually be no need for such systems and Eugen's claim about them being out of scale would actually be genuine, but sadly that's not the case here.

On top of all that, planes have always handled very awkwardly and been clunky and unwieldy since they are units capable of 3d movement forced into a 2d game. This is less of an issue with helicopters since they can hover in place, but planes are unable to effectively maneuver like they should, making them just handle poorly and awkwardly. They simply do not fit with the game's engine.

Making planes more expensive and rare would probably already do the trick.

the recent nerf of the planes proves that there is a problem...

Everything with the game play is crap, the Russians hardly ever miss, one Russian infantry unit can hold off 3 tanks and infantry, the Ai always knows where your units are, try it ,place a unit in the deeply wooded area, and they will find you every time, the Dev team really need to sort this insult of a game out.
