I am a huge fan of Sid Meier's Pirates, and judging from appearances, this game looks like little more than a high gloss remake. And frankly, that might be fine with me. I want to trust Kalypso to do this sort of reboot well, but I'm still a little disappointed over what happened with the Startopia remake....

I was watching the dev pre-recorded video. On one of the combat screens it showed the pirate Jean Lafitte whose portrait happened to be that of a woman. DING, DING, DING! Wrong answer Kalypso. Jean Lafitte was definitely a guy. Which means that the devs did a really bad job of researching famous pirates of the Caribbean (what else did they get wrong), don't care about historical accuracy (unacceptable to me) or are a bunch of woke fantasy worlders who find it necessary to gender swap (major deal breaker...

I genuinely don't understand how I like this game so little. It has everything I was looking for. I'm a big fan of the old Pirates! games, and of turn based battles. But this is so... dry. The attempt by the first mate to inject some humour and character just falls flat, and it's only taken a couple of hours of game play to become hugely irritating. But the worse things are the battle.
