Chapter 5 Roman Numeral Puzzle (2nd one with squares and circles)...Can someone explain the rationale behind the solution?
After 45 minutes of staring at the second roman numeral puzzle in Chapter 5, I had to admit defeat and enable hints. For starters, the hinting system is incorrect based on the final solution. It indicates that you should number the board with an unspecified numbering format. If we assume it's referring to a chess board numbering format (since we just interacted with a chess board in the previous room) then the given number coordinates are incorrect.

After that I had to go look up the solution online and I still don't understand the rationale behind it. The walkthrough (and hint #2) just states that the higher numbers need to be near the center of the grid. I'm failing to see the logic here, or a way the player would know that based on puzzle context. Am I missing something?

The puzzle is a little incorrect as far as I can tell, but essentially I have to think about it like minesweeper. When you use your oculus perpetualis (or whatever it's called) it shows which spaces on the grid should be circle tiles (the big ones that you're actually moving around) and which should be square tiles so your only remaining job is to figure out WHICH of each shape tile goes where. The number on the circles and squares are indicating how many circle tiles and square tiles should surround it. Naturally because the final solution has them grouped relatively in the center, the center tiles would have more tiles surrounding them than the outer ones. They are also counting the tiles you cannot move btw. It's also a worthwhile hint that because the arrangements of the circles and squares are mirrored so are the arrangements of the numbers.

I also got stuck on this but reading the comment I got it.
To make it very simple:
- The number in the circle shows how many round tiles should be around the tile
- The number in the square shouws hom many square tiles should be around the tile
- Also count the two fixed ones as squares

It is correct then.

I was having a bit of trouble with this one also, spent 15 or so minutes wasting my time and gave it away late at night. Had a look at YT and found it in a guide, took a pic of it completed, printed it out and placed all parts where they should be. Took about 2 minutes.
Some of these puzzles just don't make sense even if you know all about Roman Numerals etc. Some of them defy logic......But I guess the game is designed to make us think.

I had the correct puzzle solution but nothing happened. I restarted the game multiple times, retrying multiple times to solve puzzle. I know I didn't move tiles in the same order. Finally, the game accepted my tile placements.

So this is what we're talking about: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3168873873 What a pain in the ass. I made this screenshot after I followed the last hint - which wasn't a hint anymore but the description of the exact pattern. Man...!
The screenshot misses the last step, you need to shift the upper right tile one panel to the left and it will be done.
This puzzle (as well as the whole chapter) was no pleasure. I hope the game gets better but I have a bad feeling...

Thanks to your description I eventually understood the idea behind it. I would not have found that logic in a million years. They pushed it too far this time.
It was even hard to go by the assist they provided. No fun at all.

Btw the fixed ones are not both squares, they count as what they are.

Finally I can put this one to rest, It drove me crazy not understanding the logic behind this one. I had to use the hints to get the solution and even with the solution couldn't understand why... maybe I shouldn't be trying to solve puzzles late at night lol :cozyspaceengineersa:

Thanks for the explanation people! :cozybethesda:
