Your character has some stats like Health, Stamina, Energy, Arm Strength, Carry Weight
You earn XP from combat and pretty much anything you do in the game, also from quests. Some activities earn combat XP and some earn survival XP.
It has a perk-based skill system, where you earn XP and level up for a combat or survival skill, and each time you level up, you get some skill points to allocate into various skills. When the skill grows from 0 to 120, it'll earn six perks along the way. It's kinda like how Skyrim and Days Gone works.
For example, if you level up your rifle skills, the six perks you get will improve your rifle shooting performance.
