There's this weird trend of taking what's essentially a niche game and trying to make it appeal to everyone. I imagine someone from the accounting department or perhaps a visionary co-director thought FP2 would perform better as a sequel to Civilization instead of Frostpunk.
Alas, it did not. Just like many similar misguided projects before, it did not please anyone in particular, it failed to gain new audience AND it alienated the existing one. Greed ruins things, eh?
I say "greed" because I'm not sure how else to explain the fact 11bit gave so little budget to what's essentially their flagship IP they owe their success to. This current situation where they are still doing HOTFIXES some 4 months after release is wild. That's after the game being delayed, mind. It's a de-facto Early Access game which was pushed out a year earlier they got business to. And for what? To what end? Just to charge us full price? If you're desperate for money - go to a bank, maybe sell your yacht or something.
And now, the majority of sales for the game already happened, I don't see why they would be motivated to have any major commitment to this game anymore. Just to save the IP and make Frostpunk 3 possible some day? I feel 11bit clearly expects this cow to give more milk she's capable of, and will flog it to death in the process.
2. Who the frak cares only about recent reviews and ignores total reviews unless there's been a DLC release within a week or two?
Edit:
That's a nice book chapter you wrote there. Got anything of substance to back up all these claims? I mean, you totally aren't just spouting all of this off without having done some serious market research and gone through 11bits own internal documents that prove all these assertions of yours first, right? Right?
And wow, a game is getting hotfixes 4 months after release is "wild"? In what world exactly? If at all, agame NO LONGER getting patches and hotfixes just 4 months after release would be indication of some serious issues with the developer and/or abandonment of the product. Gee, imagine if Frostpunk 1 had seen all developer effort ended just 4 months after release, I wonder how much you'd have complained about that.
And then the next paragraph you start talking about how they totally shouldn't bother having any committment to the game anymore. Could you make your mind already? Is the devs continuing to work on and providing patches and hotfixes 4 months after release good or bad? You can't just try to argue one in a paragraph and then the other in the next if you want to be taken seriously.
Also to Harris:
Comparing this game to Civ shows me you clearly never played Civilisation. All these games have to do with eachother is being placed on a hexagonal grid and the word 'Districts'. These games are not similar to one another in anything but this. But if you still believe this is a Civ clone I'd be happy to hear your argument on why this game is civ.
Yeah, most likely some DEI hire. 11bit stocks tanked really hard after this release, they wanted more and risked. Their choice, will see how it comes in the end for them, not great so far.
And don't mind those fanboys, they will eat anything greedy developers throw at them.
You want evidence? Look at Steamdb.info.
Frostpunk 1[steamdb.info] has a current average of about 4,000 players per day, before the latest sale (when it jumped to about 7k daily players over the last few days).
The total game owner estimate (scroll down on the right) is about 4 million players.
It has 110,000 positive reviews.
FP2[steamdb.info] has a current average of about 1,000 players per day, and it's the shiny, new version.
The total game owner estimate (scroll down on the right) is about 500,000 players.
It has 15,000 positive reviews.
That's a big difference. The populace has spoken.
And frostpunk 2 has less content than 1 for now. It has 1 scenario and endless mode compared to the 4 + 2 DLC + 3 endless mode modes that first game had, although that one scenario has a bit more variations than 1 had.
I do believe frostpunk 2 will get better over time as the modding scene appears and once we get the content updates they're promising.
The game has problems, but a lot of critique I see feels like it was made by people who came into the mindset they won't like the game. Anything about "Civ clone" is nonsense, I strongly disagree about the people who say the game "lost its soul" (whatever that's supposed to mean), some people act as if they refused to watch trailers at all, and any people calling the game "Early access" clearly never saw a game in early access in their lives.
Yeah, not interacting with you mate.
Go to my profile. Check how many hours I've got on Civ 6. Come back and apologize.
To me, the defining feature of Civ 6 is its city-building: districts, buildings inside those districts, adjacencies.
Now look at Frostpunk 2: districts, buildings inside them, adjacencies. It ripped off Civ 6 entirely in this regard. And please don't waste time trying to counter with silly arguments like "fRoStPuNk 2 dOeSnT hAvE cOmBaT!"
Furthermore, here's a PC Gamer for you: https://www.pcgamer.com/games/city-builder/ive-lost-weekends-to-crushing-dissenters-and-seals-in-frostpunk-2-and-thats-why-its-my-personal-pick-for-game-of-the-year/
Frostpunk 2 definitely scratches my Civilisation itch in a way I hadn't quite expected. That's why I've lost days to it in the same way I would any good Civ game.
I'm pretty sure it's a paid piece, meaning 11bit wants its game to be associated with Civilization, the intent is very palpable there. Even if not, it was compared to Civ many times ever since the demo feedback. I'm sorry you fail to see the clear inspiration there, bordering on plagiarism.
Turn based combat is literally the main thing of civ. If you're going to claim that it ain't, We won't have a lot to discuss around here.
Then when the game doesn't live up to their expectations which would've taken them 15-20min of research to understand they leave a negative review and write:(not about frostpunk)
"Not as good as the first one"
"Age of Empires is better" (even though the game only look similiar visually or have one mechanic in common)
-"To many airplanes" (which they would've known already if they watched just one 15min gameplay video)
-"To much woke" (which would be painfully obvious by reseaching what type of games their degenerate publishers have supported in the past)
A huge portion of negative reviews on steam is because of unrealistic expectations of the product.
You wouldnt leave a negative review on a brand new car about how it "only can run on electricity" and how the car you used to drive made from the same manufacturer was so much better and could run on gasoline.
Frostpunk developers doesnt "owe" you to stay true to the gameplay loop of the first game, they wanted to try something different, you did not like it.
Then just move on already, the game is not for you.
They stayed true to the lore and in many ways the atmosphere, they did not put in alot of brainwashing propaganda to get some ESG payout.
I have over 50h in it and obviously alot of other people like it aswell, it runs just great on my 6year old mid-tier computer maxxed out and they have not made alot of greedy day-one DLCs of any kind.
You criticize FP2 in every possible way. From your messages it seems that you hate the game.
But at the same time, judging by your steam account, you spent almost as much time in FP2 as in FP1. Considering that there is not a single DLC for FP2 yet and from the start we only have 1 scenario.
I liked the game. I've completed the story a few times and completed the conditions in Utopia a couple of times. But I don't see what else to do there until the DLC comes out. And you're still playing it.
I feel dissonance reading your criticism.
It would be fine if you completed the story and utopia once (it would take 30 hours maximum). And started criticizing the game.
But no. It looks like you call the product ♥♥♥♥ and continue to eat it.
In my opinion, you have some kind of unhealthy relationship with this game. Either accept that you like it. Or delete it from your computer and don't launch it anymore.
Oh, it's a classic one.
"You have too few hours so you've no idea what the game truly is - you've no right to criticize it"
"You have too many hours so you must be enjoying it - you've no right to criticize it"
How about you try to consider and entertain opinions in a vacuum from who's voicing them? I know it's difficult, not many are capable of that. Would it be easier if I quoted for you 30 other people who said the same? Come to think of it, my review does just that.
That said, it's not difficult to understand me at all. I bought a de-facto Early Access product at full price - so you can be sure I'm getting my money's worth out of it.
Secondly, a sequel to a beloved franchise I hold dear is a piece of c... code. It's a tough pill to swallow. However, there is no other Frostpunk 2 in existence for me to play instead. And taking a break from a franchise is a big ask when games take 5+ years to make this days. And who's to say Frostpunk 3 will ever be made? Or that Stokalski&Juszczyk won't turn it into Fortnite clone next time? After all, that's a profitable game, right.
So yeah, you're right, I keep eating it. It's like criticizing a politician, but still electing him again and again. I'm sure you can relate.
The odds that someone who wants to glance in here before purchasing the game will find a post from you during these months since release is quite high and they could be harmful for potential sales.
Would you "leave the store" and stop bothering the customers and permanently go on your merry way if you were given a refund and a personal apology or something? This is a sincere question.
I'm not saying you don't have the right to criticize the game.
Personally, it's weird for me to watch you play something you don't like.
Especially since the game had a beta. When you could pre-order the game, play the beta, and cancel the pre-order. Even if you didn't pre-order. You could watch gameplay videos. And realize that it's not what you wanted and not buy it.
I have the same thing with Assassin's creed. Syndicate was the last one I played. I watched the gameplay. Realized that this is not what I want. And I simply did not buy games starting with Origins. Companies understand only one language - the language of money. So I criticized the games by not buying them...
No. I cant. Because when I chose someone, I was in the "minority".
Well... With games we have a choice, to buy or not buy.
With the choice of where to live, everything is more complicated...
A refund and a personal apology? Like the one I'm owed since On The Edge which is 5 years ago? Yeah, that would work. If your employer does that for me I can promise it's gonna be my last post here. I mean, it would bring me closure if they actually fixed their game, but since we can't have that...
It's a great thing to do and it works... until it doesn't. A company does something wrong and you cross it off your list of companies you support. Then another one. And another. And another. Before long, you look up the list of this year's upcoming releases only to realize you won't be getting anything. And it's a pretty damn frustrating feeling, let me tell you.
So you either compromise and lower your standards, in doing so becoming part of the problem by enabling the continious downfall of the game industry (like AC Shadows)... or you're stuck replaying amazing games made 20 years ago, which makes you wonder why do you even bother upgrading your PC anymore.
I'm a simple man, I just want them to make good games that are a labor of love and a work of passion - not another slop rushed out of the door to make X financial quarter look good to people who don't play games to begin with. I want 11bit to go back to the days of TLA, but apparently it's too much an ask.
