Is DLSS mandatory for this game?

I have game installed on a SSD, i5-12400F and RTX 3070 on Windows 11 + 64 GB RAM. Monitor is 27" with native 2560x1440 resolution. When I put graphics settings on High I get around 50-55 fps with huger stuttering. I have changed the setting which enables Lumen. The game gets better but still 55 fps. I am forced to enable DLSS and then I get around 80 fps and no stutter. But the image looks a little bit poorer.

What is your experience and advice?

I have a very similar rig to what you posted, and back when the game released, it was miserable. It got a bit better with patches, they fixed a massive lag on autosave for example, but still, optimization was not part of the deal.

My recommendations:
1. 1080p
2. graphics on Medium
3. DLSS in Performance mode
4. don't make any colonies (outposts are better anyways)

With a 3070 you may well be running in a VRAM limit - expensive card with just 8GiB VRAM (same as my cheap RX6600). reduce texture quality to medium or so
