Intro implications
I was wondering how people interpret the intro before chapter 1?

Is it literal that that woman killed the Captain by wheeling him out in the Cold to remove him and fulfill her ambition on how the City should proceed or is it to be taken more figuratively?

We know he likely died of old age (he should have been somewhere near 80 years old), 11Bit confirmed that the old man is the Captain from Frostpunk that founded and held New London together for 30 years after the Great Storm.

Some people theorize that the woman is in fact the Stewart who steps in after the Captain's death. In some artworks where you do see the Stewart, the character has a slender body build, but most of the significant features are hidden by a long coat. 11Bit joked about it in a social post saying that the whispering woman is the Stewart "but who can tell?" which made people more suspicious.

To me, I think the Captain died of natural causes. There was no Oil in New London, the Generator functioned on Coal only, so I don't think the Captain was murdered/killed by getting wheeled into a deep pool of Oil.
And seeing the Captain's frozen face is probably because he was given a proper burial in the ice since I don't think he was thrown into a corpse pit or left out in the cold after all he did for the city and its people.

Yeah makes sense. Thanks for expounding on that. I had this impression that the Steward if it's really her came off a bit "evil" with the whispering and lofty goal that could come off as megalomaniac.

Well you can go full powerhungry on Chapter 5 where people are desperate enough to grant the Stewart the same level of authority the Captain had hoping it will end the civil war.
In that state, it's similar to how the Captain could declare the New Order or New Faith law and become the unquestioned ruler of the city. So the factions will do whatever you want without ever second guessing you.

But only 11Bit could really answer this question.

Maybe the old Captain knew the Stewart while he was stil alive? Would greatly clarify the intro scene.
Maybe while the Captain grew old and skeptical (saying that the world around them is dead) while the Stewart had other ideas to expand into the Frostlands and try what the Captain did many years ago, but failed. Probably even expand the city into a civil society like the world was before the Frost came; but the Captain might have rejected that idea thinking they were all living just prolonging the inevitable.
