Failed the very first mission on easiest difficulty..
Did everything the tutorial asked, spread out, built new districts, didn't have enough people by the end and only got a quarter of the food stored I needed.

3000 people apparently in the city but don't even have enough to make new roads to get resources?!

The game itself has a quote on that: (paraphrased) It's not about how many times we fail, it's about getting up again after we do. I too struggled at first, running out of resources and not knowing where to look. Think I got lucky, cleared prologue on the first try. Just be mindful on how to utilize resources.

Just tried a second time there, I'd built resources on every node on the map, still failed. Not enough prefabs to do anything even though I had I think 4 construction districts?

The problem with tutorial is the fact you have to do stuff exactly the way quest are going but they don't block other stuff which you should do later. Either block possibility to do other stuff or give more ressources in people. Instead 3k if you got 4k even if you ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up at start and didn't do exactly as instructed, you could salvadge prolog.

I'm learning it's a question of prioritizing. Yes, it's tempting to gather resource x now, but that might get me short on resource y which I need to construct / reach thing z. I'm still struggling as well.

To me the limiting resource constantly was workforce.
You cant get into the surrounding areas picking up some people and your city wont grow more population to produce more workers.
So you are stuck with what you have.

Actually the tutorial in its limitation is very close to FP1, as it demands you to puzzle the optimal combination and placement of stuff in a preset way, leaving you with less space and less freedom of choice to do it your way.

You dont have the population for all the extractors and farms. You need to build extractors on the two prefabs, and one on the iron for maintenance resource. You want to put extractors on all 3 of the oil so your people dont freeze, and build farms on all the farms but 1. You'll need to turn off extractors at certain points to have enough population to frostbreak, then turn they back on when you're done. On the easiest setting you can avoid sacrificing the elders or slaughtering the seals.

I failed the first time I played as well as the game isn't very intuitive.

Here are some tips.
First, build one extraction site on one oil then build 2 housing sites close to the core. (housing problem will be solved)
Next, start frost break the path to the food from the other side of the core, and start 2 farms.
Next, build an extraction site on the prefab plot closest to you.
Material will be the next problem but is not as important as food.
You will need to build another oil extraction for the upcoming decrease in temperature. ( you will need 3 in total)
At this point, there is an easier route (the seals, south close to an oil plot) or the other 2 farmland that is the furthest. ( one on top and another in between the cliff). I did option 2 and was still able to complete 20-30+ weeks ahead, I did not touch the seals)
Once the food problem is done you can start addressing the material problem. At this point, your first prefab plot should run out and you should only build the next extraction to the west as you will face workforce issues. Deconstruct the first extraction for prefab and money.
Build food storage for capacity close to your food site (3 plots for a 10% decrease in workforce). You will need 2 storage. ( You can also shut down the prefab production once you collect enough as it is wasting workforce, fire and material demand)
You can fast-forward to win the Prologue.

You don't have enough people to do everything at once. Get fuel, get the initial prefabs extracted, then start collecting food. Once the first prefab location is exhausted, extract the second. By then you should have at least 2 food collection locations, with at least 1 food storage hub. Make certain to get the food node in the crevasse, it allows you a decision in case you're way behind on food collection. You really shouldn't be failing on the lowest difficulty in the prologue, they give you opportunities to succeed even if you're messing up. But also understand, it may take you a few attempts to understand the new game mechanics.

Amazing! This is what a strategy game SHOULD do! Or any game for that matter. There is an enjoyment that comes from learning complex gameplay. Imagine if you played Dark Souls and could just breeze through every boss without reloading. Learning how to optimize your choices to win that first chapter will be highly rewarding.

You have a few resources you need to pay close attention to and make tough choices with. The most limited one is humans - they're your most critical resource in Frostpunk so do whatever you can to plan for how you use them (you can turn off districts if you need workforce to move to work at a different one). The other resources come from either the people (heatstamps), the environment, or you make them from something else. Balancing not running out of one of those to prevent you from moving forward IS the game.

I feel like your trying to build an entire district for every single resource node. The game doesn't really cover it well, but for every "resource" your district is built on, the district extracts more of that resource type.

Don't build 1 food district for 1 node of food. You need 1 food district to be build on top of like 3-6 food nodes, etc

I guess its better the way it is now, prologue is to make you familiar with the game, having too much resources don't do that. It sits you right down for how the game is going to be like.

You mean the prologue? I failed that too the first time. I think that's why they added it, a short mission to get you used to the mechanics
