And it also would be helpful to be able to generally prioritize whether the generator should use coal or fuel, after steam (especially if you have the generator specialized for steam).
It's a bit of lacking QoL there.
As far as I know steam is the least priority on the list of fuel to use.
I think it would be 1st Oil, 2nd Coal and lastly Steam the 3rd so if you didn't choose it as the priority in the fuel tab, It will never be used as long you still another fuel available.
its an efficacy thing, oil has 2-1 while the others have 1-1 so its used by default. You can get the tier 2 upgrade that lets you focus what resource you want to use but it really should be using gas first by default in all cases even if you have it set to something else with that upgrade. I assume its something that will get patched before long, or at the very lest will be one of the firs things to get modded
The player only needs to decide what to prioritize after steam: coal or oil. For simplicity, I'd suggest to make that the only switch.
The second generator upgrade could instead just give a passive bonus to the fuel type that currently has the largest share of the overall consumption.
