I wanna change my generator fuel
I'm on chapter 2, my coal supply is full, but my generator is only using petroleum. Why am I using the fuel that I lack instead of using the fuel that I have spare? The game says I can use both fuels in the generator, but I see no option for it.

You have to upgrade it with the relevant building. If you went 'adaptation' if you're progress then you have to use oil once you upgrade it.

This is stated clearly on the techs.

Edit: I do wish you could choose the dominate fuel of the new economy though, even if just at the start. I think the point of moving to oil though is to centralize around the new and more complex hydrocarbon work and basically trust in the, frankly enormous, amounts of oil to supply civilizations needs.

I believe after you upgrade to petroleum coal is used for certain colonies, but I could be wrong about this so please don't quote me. That's what after a second play through I found that switching to Petroleum is best done after you set up the colony at the abandoned dreadnought (that is if you're playing the story mode.)

I'm in the same situation, it seems the game automatically uses oil if you have any. I'll let you know if it switches to coal once the oil runs out, but in the meantime I'm just wasting coal... Would be nice to be able to control it.

can you not turn off the coal production?

It uses the most efficient resource, so once you upgrade the generator again (Second research) You can switch what is the most efficient in it via optimizations by clicking on the generator.

This'll let you swap fuel consumption around.

This exactly, same goes for utopia builder... I was sitting at +600 coal with full stockpile, while +100 oil (empty storages) get used immediately.

I didn't realise I could turn off the outposts, I did it now. It still seems very weird not to be able to control which fuel it uses when there are multiple options.

There is a research building to turn coal to oil.

This, just research the Pressurized Coal Liquefactor building and you're good to go on the overabundance of coal you have (for now lol)

its even worse imo when its gas vs oil, you can't collect gas so anything + is going to waste and so it should be using that above everything else but oil seems to be the default

So we got two solutions, another generator upgrade to switch or Pressurized Coal Liquefactor to turn coal to oil. Thanks guys.
