do i have to house automatons?

i just took in a automaton for 400 workforce and my housing and food need went up, i thought automatons were just a static bonus to workforce, i mean, why would i need to feed a big robot spider and make sure it gets housing?

I actually have never taken them in. So it is possible they may be bugged. Are you certain nothing else happened. The game does reach a point where you're spinning a lot of plates at once.

i didnt notice my population growing, which is pretty hard to miss since its in the middle of the screen in big letters, i didnt take any humans in because i was already short on room, and other than that nothing else increases the need for living space nor food
