Near the start there is a little island to the south east. It's easy to get to , but once there you can't get off. It's surrounded by cliffs and the poison ocean. Going to this island and deciding to explore it was how I learned you can't go into the purple water AT ALL. I lost a bunch of stuff when I finally died (had to wait for starvation) and since there is no way off the island I can't recover what I've lost.

I'm going to start over since I lost a bunch of stuff, some of which I assume is not easy to replace (runic keys?). In any event this really put a damper on my enjoyment of the game so far. There needs to be something to teach players that the purple water isn't just dangerous but completely uncross-able before this kind of thing happens. I'd personally prefer no inventory loss on death. That's simply never a fun mechanic for me, but if you're going to have that then stuff like this seems like a good way for a play through to get tanked if you lose an important item in a place you can get to but not get out of it. Seems like the map design will need to be more careful.

There is the option in the difficulty setting. I used the no drop om death.

Also later one those are accessible islands, but there is noting on them I have checked out every one if those. Don't wanna give any spoilers

Edit for clarification: You are told not to go into the ocean as well as 'take food' and 'drink water'. A long list of items really.
I went anyway or at least tried to. I have 2 ghosts wandering offshore. I tried throwing down a vine bridge but when I touch the water it ports me back to land with a heavy dose of poison. Oh well.
