Performance issue
I finally got the demo to load the game after shutting things down and reducing all options to simple. I thought maybe it was a memory issue (although I have 16 GB), but actually the GPU was at 100% for most of the demo.

Steam lists this as the minimum:
Processor: Intel i5-6600 Series @ 3.5 GHz / Intel i7-4760 @ 3 GHz

I have this:
Intel i7-6700K @ 4 GHz

So either the demo has some missing optimization or the specs are off. When I can get it to load, it wasn't stuttering often. I almost gave up trying to get it to work, which isn't a great first impression.

Thanks for letting us know about this 💚

As Cook66 has mentioned, the game is still in very early stages, so it hasn't been fully optimised yet. All of this feedback will be hugely helpful for us when it comes to polishing up the game for release in 2023.

Alongside reducing the graphic settings to Simple, one of the most impactful ways you can improve performance issues is by reducing the View Distance in the settings to the lowest possible option. We've found this usually has a greater effect than lowering the graphics settings.

You are playing with integrated graphics in a CPU model that is 7 years old? That's your problem then.

I started the demo now on a top of the line computer, using an NVME SSD.

Loading the game was extremely slow. I don't think I've ever waited so long for anything to load on this computer before. There has to be some kind of major optimization issue under the hood.

But stuff like this is what demos are so good at sussing out, hopefully the devs can figure out whats causing it and find a solution before the game is released.

A developer of this app has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

it's not just y'all, I have a PC that can handle death stranding at max graphics settings no problem, and this demo was stuttering and having VERY low framerates. There have also been random black flashes onscreen? And load time was VERY slow. adjusting the render distance helped quite a bit, it's playable when reduced to minimum

Hi jahill007, are you using a dedicated graphics card or an integrated one? If you happen to be using an integrated one, it would be below our min spec unfortunately, sorry about that! If a dedicated one, may I ask which one? It'd definitely help us with our performance optimization efforts. Please let me know!

Hi Bo, the black flashes we definitely haven't seen before. Would it be possible for you to use the in game bug report function in the Pause menu to file a bug report for us when this happens? The report will also log your specs, so we can help investigate asap. If you have a screen or a video of the black flashes, you can also post that on discord, and that would be super helpful as well. Thanks so much!

if/when I jump back in game, I'll try and remember to file a bug report right after I see them. they're VERY brief, just like a few frames at most I think, I can't tell if the entire screen flashes back or just large portions of it. I wouldn't be able to capture them in a screenshot, and I genuinely doubt I'd be able to run the game concurrently with a screen recording program, my poor computer would overheat :( sorry that's not super helpful

Gotcha. Filing a bug report in game would be super helpful, so if you get a chance to help us, it'd be amazing. I'm also wondering what DirectX version you are using? Please let me know! Thanks a ton!
