This MAY be something related to the lack of current Steam Deck Verification. I'll share this with the QA/Dev team for them to look into further as we're working on a patch for official Steam Deck Verification soon.
I have seen this issue with one other game on deck (Mystia's Izakaya) and some people on that game's steam forum have posted technical details you may want to find and read. It's something to do with the windows path not lining up between Proton on the deck and actual Windows.
Started a new save file on the Steam Deck, synced and loaded it up on my PC, played some more and when I went to load it up on the Deck, it was as if I never played on my PC despite it being "Up to date" with the console being online.
To add insult to injury, the Steam Deck then OVERWROTE the newer save on the cloud with this older one.
Also just for clarity, when I knew I was going to be going back to the Deck I turned it on ahead of time to make sure it synced. Since I maybe had no more than an hour of playtime I might just wipe everything and start again from PC and see what happens.
When I finally got back to check my PC, the progress I had made on PC was still there. This was the save that originally started on my Steam Deck, picked up later on my PC, and then for whatever reason wouldn't sync back to the Deck and had thought that the Deck overwrote it after loading it up and exiting the game. So, I had thought that maybe it wasn't syncing the original save files. but it had worked the first time; It's just been subsequent times.
Also, from this file on my PC, on the file select screen, the name on the file is blank. If I select it the name appears and the save file is actually there.
For now I've had to disable cloud saving.
Sounds like the folder mismatch posted above could be helpful to look into, though I'm having trouble finding any files I could copy to the save folder manually. The "remote" folder for this game's ID only has a cache file from what I found, but I could be looking in the wrong place.
Will just disable sync and avoid playing this on the Deck for the time being. It's run generally fine actually playing it on the Deck (aside from some inconsequential visual garbage outside the refresh area since the game is 16:9 and the Deck is 16:10). Hopefully it'll get resolved soon and be verified compatible.
The game is uploading to the cloud the contents of the:
[Game install folder]\save] folder, which in reality seems not to be used for saves, instead of:
"C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\VHR_THE_FINAL\save"
In this, the "steamcloud.vdf" file does not appear, which would confirm that the correct data is being uploaded to the cloud.
I understand from this that it is a question of configuring steamcloud with the correct new path. I think that the path of the folder that it updates may be from an old version.
My save data is not syncing across devices.
Have you ever played the demo? I believe the save folder in Local/VHR_THE_FINAL is from that, and the save folder in the game's directory is actually the one being utilized.
Perhaps the game is still looking to upload a save from the demo's save folder (Local/VHR_THE_FINAL) rather than the one in the game's install directory. Could explain why Steam Deck progress is uploaded to the cloud but PC progress isn't.
