I am considering buying one.
I have a Samsung C49RG90, I also use it for work, so if you need a lot of space in general it is one more reason to buy it. It is a spectacular and immersive monitor like few others, for black bars it depends on the aspect ratio, now I can tell you that, in games that do not support it properly, after some time I don't pay attention to the black bars anymore (like Hades). , if the game supports 21: 9 over 16: 9 it still remains wonderful, RDR2 or the newer New World in 32: 9 on this monitor is really a different experience, whoever says otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. I personally am satisfied with the purchase, also because gaming will move slowly even on these resolutions.
I'm having one (the non-Neo from last year) and it's working like a charm, but in some games very taxing (50% resolution scale still looks insane!). Firmware still has some annoyances (e.g. all resolutions are stretched to full screen with G-Sync enabled) but other than that, very nice.
Playing a game like ESO, BF1, BFV, or HZD feels just insane, but you have to make sure to set the proper FOV to avoid stretching (even more so than on 16:9). And yes, for work stuff it's just nice. It's essentially two 27" screens next to each other without a distracting border in the middle, so you can also split your screen 25%/50%/25% or similar.
Game support varies, some support up to 21:9, others up to 32:9, some with glitches, some flawless, etc.
Few examples:
Last few Battlefield games: 32:9
Monster Hunter World: 21:9
The Elder Scrolls Online: 32:9
Warframe: 32:9
Age of Empires 3/4: 32:9
Dark Souls 3: 16:9
Horizon Zero Dawn: 32:9
Assassin's Creed: most 32:9, some like AC3R 21:9
Diablo 2 Resurrected: 21:9
Marvel's Avengers: 16:9 (areas outside are rendered, but glitched in cut-scenes)
As stated exactly from PSBlog: "Alongside the graphic and performance improvements, we are also offering 21:9 ultra-widescreen support."
Nothing else. So unfortunately probably not or it will just work.
which is exactly why they're "ignored"
