I thought only Fortnite players used EGS...

That's exactly the thing my friend. The fornite player base is huge and its mostly zoomers... what Epic wants to do is turn them into EGS game buyers not just Fornite skin (or whatever else that game for sale) purchasers.

It's very smart move on their part.

These kids now have a way larger library of games on their Epic account than on Steam and you can't miss what you never used so I doubt they give a damn about all the missing features the Epic launcher has vs the steam ecosystem us steam gamers have grown accustomed to.

It is what it is. EPIC is using their fortnite cashcow for all its worth to keep their fortnite players for life. If their retention is but 10% that's a huge windfall.
They are trying to get new PC gamers who will use Epic first because they don't know anything yet, probably a good portion of those who try Steam will switch primarily over to Steam when they learn what Epic is lacking. A majority of people only cares what happens on the surface and don't care about the details, so whichever has the most functions will in the end have the most players.

Yeah it's all about retention rate and they are doing the right moves to retain as many of their fortnite kids as possible.

Smart play. They know they won't convert any of us steam stalwarts but if the fotrnite kiddies don't care about the extras steam has... well that's their thing.

Well one thing about kids is that they're behave very weird regarding paying for microstraction and buying a game (I know first hand from myself lol), they don't mind paying small amount of money over time that turn into a tremendous sum to buy microstraction in a f2p game, and I have to stress the f2p part as it's the main drive for them to pay for it. While buying a game upfront with a big sum is something they would hesitate, more than often they have also the thought that "if I can download it free on the internet why would any idiot buy it"

So the only way to convert those kids to purchaser would be playing the waiting game till their mature enough to think about buying a game
And at the moment, that trash is losing money each year

I admit I did have that mindset once, in truth Gabe Newell's approach to anti-piracy is what changed my mindset. Steam offering such features and ease to keep your games that I started to buy games again, now I buy all the games I play and skip the ones I don't or won't buy.

Look, the thing with EPIC and Sweeney is they basically know more about steam and its profitability due to steamspy than basically anyone outside of Valve. All they are doing is trying to secure as big a slice of the lucrative PC gaming pie as they can.

All I'm saying is that Epic is spending their money wisely on the growth of their storefront even though at first sight to us it might look like they are throwing their money away on their inferior garbage platform.

Yeah it inconveniences us some as steam users but time exclusives aren't that big of a deal. We aren't the target of their efforts at any rate.

I mentioned Fable for the simple fact of the "any publicity is good publicity" though I don't think Epic's to Fable's level, only thing I know of that might be able to rival it would be No Man's Sky.

Microsoft already took up that fight with the windows store. I will be honest when I first heard of Epic and their lower cut I genuinely thought that it would be good for PC gaming but their lack of effort to compete with the Steam Launcher and their reliance on timed-exclusives has shown they aren't pushing us forward into the future, they are trying to drag us back with dying concepts. The fact that we are talking on a forum for God of War on Steam, shows that exclusivity is a dying concept.

While I agree, the store exclusivity thing is nowhere near as big a deal as console exclusivity is. Console exclusives require hardware and platform commitment, as opposed to... idk spending 5 minutes to sign up for their store, clicking "generate password" on bitwarden, and then scanning the QR code to set up authy so you have a secure account, ig? You don't need to commit to buying or following the platform, you don't have to pay fees, etc. so, to me, at least, it's no deal breaker esp. if I have any return on it (eg. lower prices or more content). Heavily prefer having my games on Steam, though.
It's not even just about consoles before Epic, PC was starting to move past store exclusives. While not entirely both Microsoft and EA stopped requiring their store to get their games, and how Bethesda quickly backed down from requiring their own launcher as well.

I was kinda hoping we would get to a point where all major games were available on Steam, Windows store and Epic on launch.

Edit: Epic is kinda like the Nintendo of PC gaming. Instead of trying to actually compete with the competition they instead try to use exclusives to get people.

Why do newbies come to steam to talk about an awful, useless newbie platform that most people despise? What do newbies get out of it?

Who cares about Epic? It's worse than Steam, but still uses DRM. We need a GOG release.
