As amazing as LABWORKS is and the incredible work those devs did, BONEWORKS will always, of course, be far superior. So if you have an extra couple of bucks, I'd say buy BONEWORKS SOLELY for the campaign experience. If you're looking for an amazing sandbox experience, then definitely BONELAB is the way to go as the modding community is insane and there are just so many great mods out there right now.
TLDR: boneworks is the better game to start with as it has a proper campaign and bonelab is where all the fans are right now and where you will be after you're done with the game and it's side activities as its a direct upgrade gameplay-wise but not content-wise.
Bonelab is good if you want to mess around with mods. The Campaign in Bonelab is short and it is really just there to get you familiar with the concept of modding Bonelab. Mods are pretty easy to install too.
