If this first commercially accessible Virtual Reality Headset was released in 2019, we have only had 3 years to conducts studies on how VR affects children. The number of studies is few, as the video stated. Only time will tell.
Personally, unless you're letting them play for hours at a time in one go, for multiple weeks, I can't see VR causing any permanent effects on a child. Our brains are very malleable, and a child's especially.
It's up to you if you want to "risk it" but, really, I doubt there's any actual danger.
The more important thing is that Bonelab...isn't really child appropriate.
Sure, there's the violence in the game but that's for the most part basically cartoony. You shoot holograms and brightly colored featureless people whom don't even bleed real blood for the majority of the game, and the two levels where you actually do fight a human-like enemy is more arcadey than serious. That's not really the issue.
There's also the sexual aspect of Bonelab; two characters are female, one with exposed cleavage and the other in a tight maid-like outfit. Personally, if you're fine with violence then you should also be fine with light sexual aspects, and the fact that these characters are female isn't important nor called to attention in the game. They're just there, with all their "jiggly goodness" if you will. Not a huge deal.
No, I personally think the problem is that Bonelab has a dense and serious story told through the environments and secrets you can find, and with that in mind I can't really see a child enjoying the game. It's less that it's inappropriate because of violence or sex, and more that they just won't understand what exactly is going on, and that is a huge part of the game's appeal.
Personally, I'd ask why they want the game. If they just want to shoot ♥♥♥♥? Get them H3VR or a non-vr shooting game.
As a huge fan of BONEWORKS, and someone who legitimately does enjoy many aspects of BONELAB, I have to say: that's a huge exaggeration. The story isn't really as "dense" as it is "contrived", with threads everywhere that lead nowhere. It pales in comparison to BONEWORKS, when it comes to story. Additionally, the story in BONELAB is very unimportant to overall enjoyment.
I mean, i get it, cause then you end up with posts on games like Grand Theft Auto 5 or some insane gorey horror games where they're like "Is this ok for my 4 year old to play? hurr hurrr hurr".
I've never played bonelabs or works. I let my older son play this game, and somehow he made it to some area that looked like an office building, not the "Hang Yourself" Simulator i was in. So I was genuinely curious, and figured i'd strike up a conversation with others.
