Going to black will get annoying. I think a more fun way of handling knockouts is to literally get "knocked out of" your avatar. The scenery turns a blurry dim monochrome, the sound gets muffled, and the player ends up "ghosting" out a short distance away from his avatar (or farther, depending on how hard the knockout is). Over time as the avatar wakes up, the player drifts closer and closer until he rejoins his avatar. There could even be ways for the player to somehow speed up the recovery process instead of just waiting it out on auto. Similar to how controlling a heavy weapon in the game is easier when you match your movements to its weight, maybe regaining consciousness can be done faster by moving your ghost self over to the avatar and roughly matching its pose to "get back into the body".
I love this idea.
